Optional ½-day Field Trip – Wednesday October 14^th Afternoon

The Framework Species Method for Forest Restoration

This trip will demonstrate the framework species method of forest restoration by visiting trial plots of various ages (1-9 years old) in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park and Huay Thung Tao, about 1¼ hours’ drive from Chiang Mai. We will visit both upland evegreen forest and lowland deciduous forest plots. The plots were established by Chiang Mai University’s Forest Restoration Research Unit, with BRT sponsorship, since 1998 and now offer students a unique facility for studying biodiversity recovery in a restored forest landscape. The trip will cover the techniques of establishing, maintaining and monitoring forest restoration plots, as well as biodiversity recovery. Visitors will also have the chance to meet the village environmental conservation committee to discuss the socio-economic aspects of forest restoration. Access to the plots is along a rough mountain track, but we will provide comfortable 4WD vehicles for the trip. For those leaving Chiang Mai on Oct 14^th we can provide direct transfer to the airport/bus or rail terminals by 5:30 pm. For those with more time, we invite you to stay on and enjoy the sunset at Huay Thung Tao recreational area, with a few snacks and drinks.

Registration:- The trip is limited to 20 participants on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost will be 500 baht per person, including transport by 4WD, snacks/drinks and printed information. To reserve your place on this trip, please register at the FORRU-CMU booth (near the poster section) and pay the trip fee by noon Tuesday October 13^th.

14:30 Drive to Ban Mae Sa Mai community tree nursery

14:50 Discussion with Ban Mae Sa Mai environment committee.

Snacks and drinks.

15:30 Drive to Huay Thung Tao

16:00 Viewing lowland forest plots – special challenges of restoring deciduous forests.

16.45 EITHER Group 1 – enjoy snacks and drink at Huay Thung Thao Lake with extra discussion session and sunset over Doi Suthep OR Group 2 (for those that have to catch transport) depart to Chiang Mai bus/rail/airport.
